Heaven & Earth

  1. God created Heaven and Earth, which means everything, all of creation, whether seen and unseen.
  2. “Heaven & Earth” distinguishes and yet bonds two parts of a whole. [Ps 115:16; Ps 19:2; Mt 5:16]
  3. The first creatures were spiritual (angels) or corporeal (animals), but man is both.
  4. The existence of angels is a truth of faith.
  5. Angels are spirits who are servants and messangers of God. “Angel” is an office. [Mt 18:10; Ps 103:20]
  6. Angels have intelligence and will, and are more perfect than visible creatures. [Lk 20:36; Dan 10:9- 12]
  7. As was all of creation, the angels were made through and for the Son and for the purpose of salvation. [Mt 25:31; Col 1:16; Heb 1:14]
  8. Angels have been present throughout salvation history. [Job 38:7; Gn 3:24; Gn 19; Gn 21:17; Gn 22:11; Acts 7:53; Ex 23:20-23; Judges 13; Judges 6:11-24; Is 6:6; 1 Kings 19:5; Lk 1:11,26]
  9. Angels served and protected Jesus throughout his life on Earth. [Heb 1:6; Lk 2:14; Mt 1:20; Mt 2:13,19; Mt 4:11; Mt 26:53; Mk 1:13; Lk 22:43; 2 Macc 10:29-30; 2 Macc 11:8] They proclaimed his birth and resurrection, and will announce his second coming as well. [Lk 2:8-14; Mk 16:5-7; Acts 1:10-11; Mt 13:41; Mt 24:31; Lk 12:8-9]
  10. The life of the Church benefits from angels. [Acts 5:18-20; Acts 8:26-29; Acts 10:3-8; Acts 12:6-11; Acts 27:23-25]
  11. The liturgy is adoration of God with the angels, and their assistance is invoked.
  12. Angels also care for humans. [Mt 18:10; Lk 16:22; Ps 34:7; Ps 91:10-13; Job 33:23-24; Zech 1:12; Tob 12:12]
  13. Scripture imparts the truth on the nature, value, and ordering of creation for the praise of God and our own salvation. [Gn 1:1-2:4]
  14. Everything is rooted in primordial creation ex nihilo.
  15. Every creature has its goodness and perfection, which must be respected by man to avoid disordered and contemptuous use of God’s creation.
  16. No creature can exist alone, but each must serve and complete another.
  17. The beauty (order and harmony) of the universe comes from the diversity and interrelationships of God’s creatures.
  18. The hierarchy of creatures is expressed in the creation story. God loves them all [Ps 145:9] regardless of their relative value [Lk 12:6-7; Mt 12:12].
  19. Man is the summit of creation. [Gn 1:26]
  20. There is solidarity amongst creatures in creator and purpose.
  21. God ended creation with rest (the Sabbath). [Gn 2:1-3]
  22. God established a foundation and firm laws, and man must respect these. [Heb 4:3-4; Jer 31:35-37; Jer 33:19-26]
  23. Worship can be found in the order of creation, which was made with worship in mind. [Gn 1:14]
  24. The Sabbath is at the heart of the law, and keeping the law is to conform to God’s will.
  25. The eighth day begins the new creartion. The first creation ends in the greater work of redemption.
