September 19, 2013: Davy Jones, Pirate Food, GTA5, Cyber-Shot Q-Series

Davy Jones
During our obligatory and (appropriately) brief observance of International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) at the office today, someone mentioned Davy Jones’ Locker. I had to look it up. It is folklore, a euphemism for death at sea, its origin unknown, though the earliest written mention is made in the early 1700s. As I suspected, the legend has nothing to do with the famous teen idol, star of stage and screen in the late 1960s.

Pirate Food
Also, it is worthy of note that doughnut chain Krispy Kreme celebrated ITLAPD 2013 by giving away a free glazed original to any patron who talked like a pirate and a free dozen glazed doughnuts to one who visited the store dressed like a pirate. Yarrrrrrrrggh!

Grand Theft Auto 5
I don’t keep up with video games much anymore, but everyone knows about this one or has at least heard of it before. This is a spoof preview of GTA 5 that had the office laughing out loud.

Sony Cyber-Shot QX10 & QX100
These Q-Series ‘lens cameras’ were brought to my attention today. They both look like just the lens portion of a contemporary compact digital camera without the body. With minimal physical controls, they attach to a smartphone, both physically and via WiFi, allowing the user to instantly share high-quality photos (18-20MP). A novelty? Yep. A little pricey? Maybe. Geeky? Totally!
